Artiste Social Responsibility- It’s about time!

Social responsibility is an ethical ideology or theory that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act to benefit society at large.

Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) is about an individual becoming responsible in his/her actions that have effect on communities outside his/her immediate circle.

Through voluntary commitment to ISR, individuals hope to send a positive signal about their behavior to their various stakeholders (i.e. anyone affected by the activities of an individual, or whose activities affect the individual’s), for example, the fans, in the case of a music artiste.  In so doing, Individuals who do ISR make an investment in their future and help to increase profitability.

 Hence ‘Artiste Social Responsibility’.

As we all know, music business in this country has gone to a whole new level. Corporate organizations have long time begun to identify with music artists and the music industry in its entirety. It seriously uses music as a communication tool to relate with its customers.  This has called for the average music artiste to have a business approach towards his music career otherwise he/she might be left behind. I believe a music artist in other to gain much, should deliver like a creative person and think like a business. You the music artiste are the company and your music and performance is the product and service.

What has Artiste Social Responsibility’ got to do with me as a music artiste?

I like to take creative ideas from different industries, especially the successful ones. I study how they do what they do and why they do what they do. I like to tap into their wealth of intellectual resource and thought pattern.  After all they are tapping into our creative works using our music to reach their customers and making more profit from this business relationship.  This means our music (music business/what we do) is more relevant than we thought and it is more than what we think it is.  Hence we can also make use of their ideas too.

Corporate organizations do Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to give back to the society, to gain good will first and to increase brand loyalty.  A whole lot of them have a whole and permanent budget and department for this cause. They chose a particular sector e. g education and in this case they give scholarships.

I believe as a music artist you need to build good will just like a company does. Remember there would be a point in your career that you would have to rely on the music brand that you have built.

This is what I mean:

You might not be able to be a performing artiste or recording artiste for so many years but your brand can exist for more years like an organization would. Corporate Social Responsibility is one of the activities that contribute to the building of an organization’s image.  It is an element of brand building.

Music people more than ever need to engage in ‘Artiste Social Responsibility’ (ASR) because you communicate directly to fans - the society. You are always with them thanks to your music.  You are in their living rooms via your CDs, in their offices and on their computers via your music on gadgets. You are with them almost always via your music, whether they are stationary or stagnant.  And this is a more reason why corporate organizations use you and your music to communicate their brands to your fans.  You should take advantage of this idea that if you can be a source of influence for corporate entities then there is no limit to which how you too can use your influence to promote your music brand.

How do you achieve your ‘Artiste Social Responsibility’ goals?

You could have a symbiotic (collaboration) with a corporate organization to meet your social responsibility goal. Above all you could start with what you’ve got. You’ve got your music, your brand and it has got influence on whatever amount of fans or followers that you have.

You don’t have to do the routine of visiting the mother less babies home like everybody does. Please don’t get me wrong, the motherless babies home visitation is a good idea and kind gesture, but for that artiste that desires to build something lasting that would grow concurrently with its music brand then try something different, creative and also remarkable. There are lots of different needs in our society that has to do with empowerment….  Do you see the picture now?  If you need to engage in ASR, then please be true and creative about it.

If you look within yourself, deep into your innermost, you would find a need that relates with your past that could be your own carved ASR project.  Also if you just have the desire and would like to initiate and do something, then there are a million and one ways to give back to society.

And if you have benefited from society, you should give back; it is a normal rule of life.

At entertainment Ideaz we believe, ideas are unlimited so also human wants and needs.  In a country like Nigeria, there are still over a million ways and mediums that a body can give back to the society.
