7 Habits of successful Nigerian music acts

The original title ‘7 habits of highly effective people’ actually belongs to the famous motivational speaker and author, John C. Maxwell.   Though I am yet to read the book, I just wanted to adopt the topic/title for today’s piece.  And I purposely didn’t include the word ‘highly’ because I believe we don’t have a considerable ratio of successful music artistes, though we have a couple who seem to have broken through.  Of course, things in the industry are better than before.  We do have a handful of successful ones, and as for ‘highly successful’, we are getting there.

Please don’t get me wrong.  In terms of successful, I mean; international recognition, financial rewards, quality music material, collaborations with corporate organization and government bodies, fan base, high level of influence and impact and many more.  I believe our industry has all it takes but we are yet to grab all the opportunities there are and harness all there is and that has to do with music and entertainment.  But I’m happy stakeholders are ‘not smiling’. Our music industry is a hardworking and fast growing one.

This is what I mean:

I believe 2face can have more and more influence and he can utilize his influence in a way to affect government and society- and not just 2face but many more music artistes.  And why is it just 2face..and Dbanj? They are unique...consistent-and this is what this write up is about

I believe PSquare, Dbanj and ‘co’ can be not just rich but also wealthy- And many more music artistes.

I believe we can begin to sell our records in large beyond the shores of this country and even beyond Africa.

I believe the huge gap between upcoming and successful can be covered in no time and the journey to the top can become not impossible for the average upcoming act.

I believe the years with which an artiste remains upcoming and broke can be less. A new act can in little time begin to earn from his creative work.

This I believe and many more.  I know it’s a gradual process. We should not believe we have arrived.   No we have not.

See what I mean now?

So here are the few habits and traits that I have noticed in the career of the successful Nigerian artistes that there are:

Givers

They are givers.

They give more in their records and their performances. They go the extra mile to please their fans and whoever might be interested in their music.

They put a lot into their performances both vocally and physically. They give their best to their audience. They are entertainers.  They are like a ‘must-have’ in shows and events.  The crowd expect to see them because they give more than the usual.

Risk Takers

They take risks when necessary.

They do this as long as it matters to their career and will take them and their career to the next level.

Hardworking

They work hard.

They don’t just wait for success to come.  They are proactive. They sought opportunities that will help their career up.  And when there seem to be none lurking around, they create opportunities for themselves.

Investors

They believe in their music and brand, so they invest in it.

They are the first to put all they’ve got into what they do.  Their enthusiasm, passion, and sacrifice is so evident and strong that they attract all the material they need to progress.

Consistent

They are Consistent.

They are available in season and out of season. They are consistently delivering what they know to do best-their music-, irrespective of challenges or obstacles they might have faced.

Creative

They are creative with their work.

They always come up with something new and interesting that keep them on point and in demand.

Initiators

They are initiators.

They initiate new styles and set new standards; and others follow suit.  I’m sure you notice this trend in the music industry-Someone ‘up’ the game or do something new, and others follow.  This makes them pace setters.

They lead, others follow.

Change

They are not change resistant but they adapt to change.

This is because they embrace the fact that ‘change is inevitable’.  Its either you embrace change or fight change.  And if you do fight change, you might get crushed and left behind.

Hence, they don’t fight changes that occur in the music industry.  They quickly learn the ropes and ‘up’ their game.  They stay close to the game.

They keep their ears to the ground, their eyes open and their minds working.  Hence, they keep getting it right.

Integrity

They walk their talk.

They are not just noisemakers.  They ‘do’, deliver results and then campaign. They deliver before they talk.  I’m sure you know of many examples.

Focused

They mind their own business.

They ‘hate’ less and work more.  They don’t cook beef but cook ideas that will ‘wow’ their fans and grow their fanbase.  They ignore rumours.  They might respond to critism sometimes, but they don’t let it slow them down.  They keep their eyes on the prize. To please their fans is their utmost concern.

They know that if the fans are pleased; records will sell, they’ll be booked on shows, and society will recognize and reward them.

Original

They are original.

They are skilful about sticking to their original style while they simultaneously upgrade their sound and fits it into what’s in.   They have their unique styles.  They have a name; a name that rings a bell.  Theirs is a brand name.

They are a brand in the practical sense,

A brand that carries a message,

A brand in mind.

A brand that, music lovers, corporate organizations and whatever ‘body’ that matters find it cool to associate with.  Above all they are a ‘local’ brand with a ‘global’ perspective.  That is, their originality is from home, their heritage, but they are global in their delivery.  They communicate their music with an intention to reach the world. They’ve got a global view of things...
