So much name and ‘swagger’ hype...but where is your music?

Do you just want to be popular or do you want to be patronised?

Publicity is not just about noisemaking. I believe publicity and other promotional tools used in promoting an artiste should be well directed. After all, focus makes more impact. Before all the mad publicity stunts, propaganda, PR work, personal branding and etcetera used –all- in the name of making an artiste known, the artistes and their managers should always ask themselves:

“Do we want just popularity or do we want patronage?”
“Do I want more people to know and like my songs so as to buy me?”
“Do I just want my name all over or my songs /music on the lips of Nigerians, Africans, Chinese and citizens beyond?”

2face began gaining international recognition with his song ‘African queen’.
Nice finally penetrated the market with his song ‘Gongo Aso’.

What am I trying to say? Artiste, managers and their promoters should never ignore the potent power of the ‘song’ especially when the artiste has got ‘ear friendly’ songs that are likely to be hit songs.

For those building a brand, the artiste brand should not run ahead of his music. I believe there should be a synchronisation. That is, artiste image and brand works should run concurrently with song promotion.

This is probably one of the reasons why some artistes have more popularity than they would have sales, shows and proper recognition.

When an artiste’s music is well promoted and mixed with Image and promo activities, it’s a combo that produces bumpers results-if him get better song, lol-. Music artistes are first singers, rappers... and whatever they are before they are fashionistas, events gracers, and even brands.

Artistes are ‘music people’, so let’s hear the music.....more. The brand image and name will visually aid our interest. Thanx. Next week!
