'ENTRETAINERSHIP SESSIONS'

LAUNCHING OUT .... GETTING STARTED

WHO IS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

An entrepreneur can be described as:

  •  …a visioner and a risk taker
  •  …a creator / administrator who starts, runs & manages his own business….
  • …an innovator who markets & sells his innovation
  •  …a developer who develops new goods or processes that the market demands…
  •  …a risk taker who is willing to bear the risks…. & rewards of starting a new venture
  •  …a strategist who is charged with the task of turning a business idea into reality, either through starting a new business or injecting new life into an existing one.

From the various definitions above, it is clear that when you run your own business you wear many hats. All things being equal, it is expected that you decided to start your own business because you had something to sell that you thought others would want to buy. Accordingly, in line with this train of thought and for the sake of simplicity, the fundamentals of running a business can be divided into two parts: I) the Production Part and II) the Business Part.

The production part is probably the easier part of the two stages, as it is safe to assume that the business is one with which you were probably familiar with before you decided to launch out on your own and you have got the qualities and skills that are required to produce and deliver.

The business part of it is what a lot of entrepreneurs are ignorant about and leave to “chance or goodluck”! Research has shown that it is generally believed that skills, passion, motivation and the other “soft” qualities are enough to manage and sustain the business. This belief system is however false as the “long-term success” of any business depends largely on proper business planning. In the absence of this, a lot of business owners get into trouble!! They get stuck, cannot re-strategize and this ultimately leads to the failure of the business.

Regardless of why you are interested in starting and operating your own business, nobody wants to be a failure!!!

Consequently, business planning is a must for every business owner that wants to succeed in building a sustaining and enduring business. Planning for and developing a profitable, growing business is a continuous, ongoing process.
Accordingly, this space shall be devoted to reviewing, analyzing and systematically breaking down the “business side of business”. My major goal is to empower entrepreneurs (both existing & potential) with enough information and knowledge that can be used in establishing proper systems and structures for their businesses.

Topics to be reviewed include:

Ø  Basic entrepreneurial skills
Ø  How to start a business
Ø  Turning your skill into a money-making business
Ø  The concept and importance of business planning
Ø  Developing and writing your business plans
Ø  Building an effective work system and structure
Ø  Human resource management
Ø  Marketing & sales
Ø  Raising and managing capital
…. And so much more

I strongly believe that by taking the time to learn what to expect during this entrepreneurial journey (believe me, it is a journey and not just a destination!!) and how to take care of yourself and the business during this journey, you will be on your way to building a legacy to be passed down from one generation to another…
